Color Guard
The BRHS Color Guard is a co-curricular ensemble available to all students. The color guard is a section of the marching band that performs with elements of movement, dance, equipment handling, staging, choreography, and character. Members of the color guard do not perform with musical instruments, but rather use flags, rifles, and/or sabres to provide the marching band program with a colorful visual dimension and extraordinary feats of technical skills.
After marching band concludes, the color guard continues into the winter season as a stand-alone indoor competitive unit. This seasonal operation of the winter color guard is called Winter Guard. Winter Guard runs from November to May and aims to deliver annual competitive programs designed to be performed in a gym while also operating as a developmental ensemble to grow the color guard for the upcoming marching band season. The Winter Guard season is highly competitive and operates within the circuits of USBands, MAIN (Mid Atlantic Indoor Network), and WGI (Winter Guard International). Winter Guard frequently folds in musicians that elect to march in the fall (playing their instruments) and spin in the winter (as a member of the guard).
Students that have not joined marching band as members of the color guard are eligible to join winter guard but it is expected that all winter guard members participate in marching band.
